Service Description

Teaches recognition and avoidance of common river hazards, execution of self-rescue techniques, and rescues of paddlers in distress. Emphasis is placed both on personal safety and on commonly used skills. Fundamental techniques for dealing with hazards that carry greater risks for both victim and rescuer, such as entrapments and pins, as well as mechanical advantage haul systems, are also are taught. This course is aimed at whitewater private boaters interested in upping their rescue skills in a winter specific setting and river guides who are required to have Swiftwater training for work. Check with your employer if you are unsure about specific requirements. NNWW will supply a raft and inflatable kayaks for downstream travel for participants who do not have their own watercraft. Participants are encouraged to bring all their own PPE, watercraft of your choice, and any rescue equipment that you carry regularly. "Winter" Emphasis placed on safety for cold weather, short days, and high flows. ~ Appropriate layering techniques for under a drysuit. ~ Night scenario ~ Hypothermia considerations. ~ Team boating and spacing for fast and continuous flows. ~ Identifying, avoiding, and maneuvering boats over midstream wood hazards. Location: Gasquest, CA. During the course we will have dry land classroom sessions as well as on water experience. The segment of the Smith we will operate on will depend on flows and will be announced a week ahead of time but is subject to change. Gasquet has coastal weather and is located near the redwoods, the weather can be extremely variable in the winter so please check ahead of time, including road cams for your drive to check for snow. Cancellation notices received: -30 days or more before your class or course are eligible for a full refund. -8 to 29 days before your class, 50% refund of your deposit or transfer/deferral of your deposit in full to a different class. -7 days or less before a class or course will not be refunded, but the class or course deposit may be transferred towards a future class or course. -No shows will not be eligible for a refund or transfer.
